Description
Currently seeking interested applicants for our casual Medical Communications Officer positions to be short-listed for the next available Entry to Practice training offered through the Ministry of Health. Qualified candidates will be interviewed for future spots in this training and subsequent Medical Communications Officer positions.
Performing the responsibilities of a Medical Communications Officer requires a dynamic individual. Incumbents must use professionalism and interpersonal communication skills, and understand spatial concepts (e.g. reading maps, calculating times, distance and movement) to excel in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
Medical Communications Officers (also known as call takers and dispatchers) must have strong coping skills and be able to solve problems and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Processing 9-1-1 emergency and non-emergency requests for ambulance and fire services requires the ability to work rotating shifts in a 24/7 environment.

Qualifications
- Secondary school graduation diploma or equivalent qualifications
- Valid standard first aid certificate and CPR certificate to level C issued by a training institute approved by the Director required
- Successfully complete a Restricted Radio Operator’s Certification approved by the Director
- Upon hiring:
- Must be willing to participate in or already have a comprehensive six-week entry-to-practice core training program in land ambulance dispatching
- Successfully complete the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care's Ambulance Communications Officer Certification examination
- Successfully complete a local mentorship program
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated effective critical thinking and decision-making skills
- Must have strong multi-tasking skills, the ability to maintain control under pressure, using professional judgement following Ministry of Health (MOH) policies and local procedures
- Knowledge of medical terminology an asset
- Knowledge of ambulance/fire service operations and other emergency service and communication center agencies an asset
- Keyboarding skills and ability to operate computerized telecommunications and information software
- Ability to work shift work including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
- Must be willing to participate in on-going training and learning developments as required for the position
- Reliable attendance record
