Current Rate of Pay: Min $33.04- Max $34.40

Current Shifts: Days, Evenings, Weekends, on-call rotation

Position Summary:

The Facilities Department ensures that the hospital’s equipment, spaces, structures, and infrastructure continue to support the hospitals mission of providing the highest possible quality care and experience for patients and their families.

Under the direction of the Facilities Manager, the Building Systems Technician performs planned and preventive maintenance, testing inspections and demand maintenance in a way that manages the process of failure/wear of equipment and infrastructure to meet the requirements of all hospital staff, patients and their families. The Building Systems Technician works under general supervision but is expected to exercise independent judgement within the limitations of knowledge and experience, and carries out all duties in accordance with GGH’s mission, vision, values and policies. Tasks will be assigned based on the competencies gained through training and experience and are performed in order to reduce the risks from equipment and infrastructure failures. The three main risks that the above tasks are designed to prevent are; threats to safety, threats to operations, and threats to the financial health of the hospital.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • Certificate in Building Environmental Systems or a minimum 3 years experience working in a building systems position
  • Experience writing clear, concise service documents on a computer
  • Knowledgeable about Building and Fire Codes, the provincial Ontario Health & Safety Act and various Acts and Codes such as WHMIS, EPA
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, work orders and schematics as well as read and understanding code books, operating and procedures manuals, manufacturer's specifications, log books, inspection sheets and warranties
  • Demonstrated ability to select, maintain and use proper hand / power tools and materials for the assigned task, this includes personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Knowledgeable about safety procedures for operation of lifting devices and material handling equipment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service when interacting with patients, families, colleagues and physicians
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills
  • Intermediate computer skills; to operate automated systems; complete work orders
  • Physically able to perform the activities associated with the position
  • Availability for working weekends and on-call when scheduled
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a self-directed manner as well as collaboratively within a team in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment
