Duties and Responsibilities (Key Accountabilities):

  • Design and create new innovative natural, clean, sustainable formulations (e.g. Sephora Clean, Ulta Clean, etc) in a capable, effective manner to answer trends in the market and meet project requirements
  • Develop natural formulations according to ISO 16128, COSMOS, EcoCert, etc.
  • Knowledgeable experience in various types of formulations including anhydrous, powder, single phase, emulsion products in the cosmetics, personal care industries
  • Experience with regulatory requirements for EU, CMRs, ECHA, CITES, REACH, HM restrictions, Prop 65, Microplastics regulation, GMO labelling, etc.
  • Evaluate new raw materials according to the most up to date regulations and verify materials are aligned with customer DNU and blacklists. Previous experience working with multi-national cosmetics and personal care companies is an asset
  • Reverse engineer benchmark products and reformulate to comply with customer’s requirements using innovative and technologically advanced raw materials
  • Extensive knowledge of ingredients such as sensorial powders, silicone replacements, oils, waxes, natural emulsifiers, specialty pigments, etc.
  • Good working knowledge of natural replacements for traditional silicones, synthetic materials, microplastics, restricted powders, etc.
  • Review existing raw material product specifications to evaluate compliance, and research appropriate substitutions as needed
  • Assemble and maintain collection of clean, natural, compliant raw materials for continual natural and clean formulations
  • Improve existing formulas to give enhance features, performance or to make them more cost effective
  • Remain up to date and current on trends in the retail market and trends on formulations materials, ingredients, etc.
  • Collaborate and liaise with production and planning team to ensure the proper scale up of batched from lab to large scale production size
  • Maintain and update existing formulas in the system to ensure its accuracy
  • Establish product specifications and QC standards
  • Working knowledge of regulations including HC, FDA, EU, China, etc.
  • Consistently maintain a Safe and GMP working environment
  • Execute special projects or tasks as assigned
  • Customer support and interaction on a regular basis and problem-solving.

 

Skills, Experience and Education Required:

  • Post-Secondary education (Bachelor or Master) in science
  • Minimum 8-10 years of experience in Colour Cosmetic and skin care industry including formulation
  • Extensive Knowledge of the ingredients from natural source
  • Experience with global regulatory requirements
  • Good color matching skills
