Current Rate of Pay:       Min $37.10                                                    Max $   44.69

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, Organizational Development and Employee Health Services, the full-time Health & Safety Officer is responsible for fostering a healthy and safe working environment at Guelph General Hospital and supporting the organization to comply with the legislative and regulatory requirements for health and safety.  This includes identifying injury trends and hazards, participating as an active member on the Joint Health and Safety Committee, Emergency Procedures Committee and assisting with the implementation, training and maintenance of safety programs, policies and procedures. This position contributes to ensuing there is a safe environment for patients, employees, physicians, students, volunteers and visitors.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • University/College program in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent
  • Completion of recognized Health & Safety Certificate program
  • JHSC Basic Certification and “Workplace Specific” Certification
  • WSIB Claims Management (an asset)
  • Minimum 3 years’ recent health and safety experience, preferably in a unionized hospital setting
  • Safety Audit experience
  • Demonstrated Occupational Health & Safety experience in areas such as fire protection, security, ventilation, chemical storage and use, maintenance tasks, WHMIS/GHS, Emergency Preparedness
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of relevant legislation, e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Human Rights Code
  • These duties require health and safety officers to have a thorough understanding of legislation relating to safety standards and the ability to advise corrective action and facilitate change to improve the health and safety culture of workplaces. Health and safety officers also must keep informed about changes in technology.
  • Demonstrated excellence in decision making and critical thinking to perform detailed analysis, identify problems and recommend and implement solutions
  • Strong multi-tasking, organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, including documentation and presentation skills for communication with employees, union representatives, and management at all levels
  • Strong computer skills; knowledge and experience with MS Office, RL Solutions software (an asset) Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a self-directed manner as well as collaboratively within a team in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service when interacting with patients, families, colleagues and physicians
